Scaling and Root Planing

Scaling and root planing is a deep cleaning procedure that removes plaque, calculus, and bacterial toxins from the tooth surface and beneath the gums. It is essential for preventing and treating gum disease, reducing inflammation, and maintaining overall oral health. Healthy gums are the foundation for healthy teeth and successful dental treatments.

More Info ...

Scaling and root planing is a non-surgical periodontal procedure that treats gum disease by removing plaque and tartar from above and below the gumline (scaling) and smoothing the tooth roots to promote gum reattachment (root planing). It reverses early-to-moderate gum disease, reduces gum pockets, and prevents tooth loss.

Key Aspects of the Procedure :

Scaling: The removal of dental plaque and calculus from the tooth surfaces, both above and below the gums.

Root Planing: The smoothing of the tooth's root surfaces to remove infected dentin or cementum, which helps the gum tissue to heal and reattach to the tooth.

Technique: Performed using handheld instruments (curettes) or ultrasonic cleaners that vibrate to remove buildup.

Sessions: Often requires more than one visit, sometimes treating one quadrant or half of the mouth per session depending on the severity of that particular case.
